Chess in 1809

In 1808, Jacob H. Sarratt (1772-1819) established himself as a chess professional at Salopian coffee house, London.

In 1808, A Treatise on the Game of Chess, by Jacob Sarratt, was published in London in two volumes. It is the earliest reference to the term "J'adoube" (I adjust).

On December 17, 1808, George Allen was born in Milton Township, Vermont. He was a noted college professor and clergyman. He was a chess author and nephew of Ethan Allen.
