In 1816, Les Stratagemes Des Echecs was translated into English and published. The original author was Alfred de Montigny, published in 1802.

In 1816, an article called "Introduction to the Game of Chess, including anecdotes" appeared in Gentleman's Magazine.

In 1816, An Easy Introduction to the Game of Chess; Containing 100 Examples of Games was published in London.

In 1816, Aaron Alexandre wrote Collection des plus beaux problems d'echecs.

On November 17, 1816, William Henry Hicks was born in Portsmouth, England. He was Canadian champion in 1874.
