Chess graves

Alexander Alekhine (1892-1946) was first buried in Lisbon in 1946.  In 1956, his ashes were transferred to the Montparnasse Cemetery in Paris (Section 8).  Buried with Alekhine is his fourth wife, Grace.  The grave was heavily damaged by a severe storm in 1999 (a tree fell on the grave) and was later restored in 2003.

Adolf Anderssen (1818-1879) is buried at the Osobowicki Cemetery in Wroclaw, Poland.  During World War II, his grave was damaged during bombing raids on Breslau (Wroclaw).  The grave was then neglected by the Polish Communists because of Anderssen’s German heritage.  The Polish Chess Federation moved his grave to the Osobowicki Cemetery in 1957.

Gedeon Barcza (1911-1986) is buried at the Kerepese Cemetery in Budapest.

Joseph Henry Blackburne (1841-1924) is buried at the Brockley and Ladywell Cemetery in Lewisham, England.

Samuel Boden (1826-1882) is buried at Woking Cemetery in Surrey, England.

Efim Bogoljubov (1889-1952) is buried in the cemetery of Triberg, Germany.

Fedor Bohatirchuk (1892-1984) is buried at Pinecrest Cemetery in Nepean, Ontario, Canada.

Isaac Boleslavsky (1919-1977) is buried at the Chizhovskoe Cemetery in Minsk, Belarus.

Mikhail Botvinnik (1911-1995) is buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow, Russia.

David Bronstein (1924-2006) is buried at the Chizhovskoe Cemetery in Minsk, Belarus.

Esteban Canal (1883-1981) is buried in Cocquio Trevisago, Italy.

Jose Raul Capablanca is buried at the Cristobal Colon Cemetery in Havana, Cuba.  It is the only grave with a large chess king on top.

Horation Caro (1862-1920) is buried in the Jewish Cemetery of East Ham, London.

Rudolf Charousek (1873-1900) is buried in Nagyteteny (a suburb of Budapest), Hungary.

Jack Collins (1912-2001) is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in New Windsor, New York.

Alexandre Deschapelles (1780-1847) is buried in a pauper’s grave in Paris/

Jan Hein Donner (1927-1988) is buried at Zorgvlied Cemetery in Amsterdam.

Jean Dufresne (1829-1893) is buried in the Jewish Cemetery of Berlin-Weisensee.

Jens Enevoldsen (1907-1980) is buried at Bispebjerg Cemetery in Copenhagen.  He is buried next to Aron Nimzowitsch.

Ludwig Engels (1905-1967) is buried at the Lapa Cemetery in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Max Euwe was cremated on December 1, 1981 in Driehuis-Westerveld, the Netherlands.

Captain William Davies Evans (1790-1872) is buried in the Old Cemetery of Ostend, the Netherlands.

Bobby Fischer (1943-2008) is buried at a small Christian cemetery of Laugardaelir church, outside the town of Selfoss, Iceland, 30 miles from Reykjavik.

Salo Flohr (1906-1983) is buried at the Vagankovo Cemetery in Moscow.

Thomas Frere (1820-1900) is buried at the Greenwood Cemetery in New York.

Efim Geller (1925-1998) is buried at Peredelkino Cemetery in Moscow, Russia.

Svetozar Gligoric (1923-2012) is buried at the Alley of the Greats in New Cemetery in Belgrade, Serbia.

Ernst Gruenfeld (1893-1962) is buried at the Zentralfriedhof (Central Cemetery) in Vienna, Austria.  It is one of the largest cemeteries in the world and the largest by number of interned in Europe (over 3.3 million bodies).

Eduard Gufeld (1936-2002) is buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood, California.

Isodor Gunsberg (1854-1930) is buried at Steatham Park Cemetery in London.

Daniel Harrwitz (1821-1884) is buried in the Jewish Cemetery in Bolzano, Italy.

Klaus Junge (1924-1945) is buried in the cemetery of Welle (Harburg District, Lower Saxony), Germany.

Paul Keres is buried at Metsakalmistu Cemetery in Tallinn, Estonia.

Lionel Kieseritzky (1806-1853) is buried in a pauper’s grave in Paris.  The location of his exact plot has not been found.

Ignaz Freiherr von Kolisch (1837-1889) is buried at the Zentralfriedhof Cemetery in Vienna, Austria.

Arvid Kubbel (1889-1938) is buried in Leningrad.

Louis Charles De La Bourdonnais (1795-1840) is buried at Kensal Green Cemetery in London.

Tassilo von Heydebrand und der Lasa (1818-1899) is buried at the Evangelical Cemetery in Osieczna, Poland.

Berthold Lasker (1860-1928) is buried in the Jewish Cemetery of Berlin-Weissensee.

Emanuel Lasker (1868-1941) is buried at Beth Olom Cemetery in Queens, New York.

Janos Lowenthal (1810-1876) is buried in St. Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, England.

Sam Loyd (1841-1911) is buried at Maple Grove Cemetery in Kew Gardens, New York.

Johann Maelzel (1772-1838) was buried at sea off Charleston, South Carolina.

James Mason (1849-1905) is buried in a little churchyard in Thundersley, England.

Alexander McDonnell (1798-1835) is buried at Kensal Green Cemetery in London.

Paul Morphy (1837-1884) is buried at the Saint Louis Cemetery #1 in New Orleans.  The tomb contains eight Morphy family members.

Miguel Najdorf is buried at the Cementerio de la Tablada in Buenos Aires.

Aron Nimzowitsch is buried at Bispebjerg Cemetery in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Daniel Noteboom (1910-1932) is buried in Noordwijk, the Netherlands.

Lembit Oll (1966-1999) is buried at Metsakalmistu Cemetery in Tallinn.

Karel Opocensky (1892-1975) is buried at Friedhof Vinohrady Cemetery in Prague.

Tigran Petrosian (1929-1984) is buried at the Vagankovo Cemetery in Moscow.

Alexander Petrov (1794-1867) is buried at the Orthodox Cemetery in Warsaw, Poland.

F.A.D. Philidor (172601795) is buried at St. James Piccadilly Cemetery in London, behind St. James chapel, Hampstead Road.

Harry Nelson Pillsbury (1872-1906) is buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Reading, Massachusetts.

Lev Polugaevsky (1934-1995) is buried at the Montparnasse Cemetery in Paris.

Samuel Reshevsky (1911-1992) is buried at Congregation Sons of Israel Cemetery in Spring Valley, New York.

Richard Reti (1889-1929) is buried in the Jewish part of the Zentralfriedhof in Vienna, Austria (Section T1, Group 51, Row 5, Grave 34).  His ashes are buried in the grave of his father, Dr. Samuel Reti.

Fernando Saavedra (1847-1922) is buried In the churchyard of the Brothers of the Passion at Mount Argos in Seville, Spain.

Gerz Salwe (1862-1920) is buried at the Jewish Cemetery in Lodz, Poland.

Carl Schlechter (1874-1918) is buried in Budapest.

Jackson Whipps Showalter (1860-1935) is buried at Georgetown Cemetery, Kentucky.

Vasily Smyslov (1921-2010) is buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow, Russia.

Rudolph Spielmann (1883-1942) is buried at the Northern Cemetery (Norra begravningsplatsen) in Stockholm, Sweden.

Gideon Stahlberg (1908-1967) is buried in Gothenberg, Sweden.

Howard Staunton (1810-1874) is buried at Kensal Green Cemetery in London.  His grave had been unmarked and neglected until 1997.

William Steinitz (1837?-1900) is buried at the Cemetery of the Evergreens in Brooklyn, New York (Bethel Slope Section, Lot 5893).

Mikhail Tal (1936-1992) is buried at the Jaunie ebreju Kapi cemetery in Riga, Latvia.

Siegbert Tarrasch (1862-1934) is buried at the Nordfriedhof Cemetery in Munich.

Karel Treybal (1885-1941) is buried in Prague.

Milan Vukcevich (1937-2003) is buried at Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

Szymon Winawer (1838-1920) is buried at the Jewish Cemetery, Okosowa str., in Warsaw, Poland.

John Wisker (1846-1884) is buried at the Kew Cemetery in Melbourne, Australia.

Frederick Yates (1884-1932) is buried in Leeds, England.

Johannes Zukertort (1842-1888) was buried at Brompton Cemetery in Kensington, England.  His grave is A.F. 107 x 18.  His grave was rededicated in 2012.
